Welsh Ceramics

Welsh ceramics have been a feature of Peter Francis Auctions from time immemorial and interesting items continue to arrive from private sources almost daily. The market at the top end is really buoyant. The very best of Llanelly and Swansea pottery, as well as the products of the porcelain factories at Swansea and Nantgarw, are still fetching creditable (and sometimes amazing) prices. The middle road continues to hold up well and gives really great opportunities for the collector or those wishing to start a collection.

The variety of Welsh ceramics is considerable. The quality of Swansea and Nantgarw porcelains is second to none and the level of decoration, whether in one of the London ateliers, or locally decorated in factory, is of a remarkable standard. Items designed purely for cabinet display as well as everyday utilitarian wares offer huge scope to the collector. Thomas Pardoe's botanical painting on Swansea creamware or Sam Shufflebotham's roses and Welsh ladies from 100 years later on Llanelly Pottery all continue to perform well. Less rare, but constantly popular with today's collectors are the well-known Swansea blue transfer pattern Ladies of Llangollen and Sal Roberts' Llanelly pottery cockerel plates. Of course one of the ironies of modern-day collecting is that the rarities are sometimes rare simply because they were not popular when made!

Traditional slip-glazed earthenware produced in both Buckley in North Wales and more particularly the Ewenny Pottery near Bridgend offer a fascinating collecting field. Ewenny Pottery collectors like to concentrate on the pre-World War I era and the Welsh language-inscribed items have a great following, as do their wonderful cats and pigs.

This diversity of Welsh pottery offers something to suit most tastes and budgets and there has never been a better time to start collecting something truly 'Welsh'.

Welsh Furniture

We are well known as auctioneers of Welsh country furniture and it has to be said there has never been a better time to buy a Welsh Dresser! Small Welsh furniture including such traditional pieces as coffwr bach's and stick-back chairs can still command high prices but originality and condition is fundamental.

Welsh Art

We have wide experience in identifying and cataloguing all things Welsh and have had particular success with Welsh Art in recent years. Our Fine Art sales include a designated section for 20th Century Welsh Artists and the famous names of Kyffin Williams, Aneurin Jones, Will Evans, Valerie Ganz and others feature regularly and are closely followed by more recent artists who are being carried along on their coat tails!

All things Welsh have a good following in our sales and we are obviously specialists with experienced local knowledge.
