1st Royal Dragoons 1871 Pattern cavalry helmet, with tin named to “R.H. Baskerville Esq., Royal Dragoons”. Together with a 1st Royal Dragoons officer’s visor cap by Hawkes & Co. The helmet features twelve-pointed star, fluted plume holder with red horsehair plume, foliate ear rosettes, leather-backed chin scales and lining. Tin with maker’s name “Hawkes & Co, 14 Piccadilly, London”. Captain Ralph Hopton Baskerville (Glamorgan Yeomanry and 1st Royal Dragoons) was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France, on 9th April 1918, aged 35. The Baskerville family were purportedly an inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles; Doyle was a friend of the family and often visited their estate, Clyro Court near Hay-on-Wye.
